5 Tips on What’s Next When You Feel Lost

It is so easy to feel lost today in figuring out what’s next. Mostly, I am referring to missionaries coming home but honestly we may all feel this way because of the toll that COVID has taken on our lives.

With things cancelled, lost jobs, coming home early from the field and less money, it’s easy to feel like life is such a mess. Sometimes we grasp at whatever comes our way or just give up all together. Maybe we keep moving forward but feel discouraged or confused because we don’t have it all figured out.

Wherever you are at, have hope! There are some things you can do and perspectives you can take that will help.

  1. Rest. Yes, read your Bible, watch TV, get enough sleep, etc. But what I mean by this is rest in the fact that God is still on the throne and still moving. This may mean your perspective needs to change and that you ask God to give you a heavenly view of your situation. Remind yourself what He has done and what He is capable of doing going forward.

  2. Focus on your life vision. Has this changed? Rework it. Is it the same? Refocus on what it really means to you. You must have a vision for where you are going in life. Without vision it will be easy to get lost. If you don’t have a vision statement, go write one!

  3. Don’t give up. What I mean by this is not only keep pushing forward but do the things you need to do. If you need to get a temporary job in food service or retail or babysitting or dog walking, do that! You can’t get to where you want to be without taking care of your immediate needs first. If you can’t pay your bills or eat, it will be hard to focus on your vision statement.

  4. Adapt. Our world has changed in so many ways due to COVID. More people are staying at home and not getting to do the things that once kept them feeling stability. So seek to adapt your self care routine, your community, adventures and all of life to what is now. Implement the rhythms that worked in the past in a new way today. Don’t be afraid to be creative but be intentional in doing this for your life!

  5. Get help. Finally, you CANNOT do this alone. Have some zoom sessions with a friend, mentor, pastor, colleague. Share about how lost you might feel, be honest about where your heart is at. Then seek guidance. Get life coaching. Get counseling. Get mentoring. Even if it costs money, it will be more worth it than you think.
